THE Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has embarked on an extensive storm drain clearing exercise across the city as part of efforts to curb flash flooding and enhance cleanliness following the onset of the rainy season.
The council’s storm drain clearing exercise is ongoing, targeting known flooding hotspots across the city to ensure smooth water flow during the rainy season.

The programme comes as part of the local authority’s campaign to improve solid waste management and maintain hygiene standards in line with the city’s Smart City vision under Vision 2030.
Speaking during a donation ceremony where local clothing company Signature Suits handed over six dustbins to the council on Thursday, Bulawayo mayor Councillor David Coltart, who was represented by the chairperson of the health, housing and education committee, Councillor Ntombizodwa Khumalo, said clearing storm drains was a key priority as the city braces for more rains.

“We have received growing concerns from residents about flooding in several suburbs, even though the rainy season is not yet in full swing. To address this, the city has embarked on a comprehensive programme to clear storm drains that have been blocked mainly by litter and illegal dumping,” he said.
“We continue to urge residents to desist from disposing of waste into these drainage systems as it worsens flooding.”
Cllr Coltart said that while the local authority has been facing challenges in refuse collection due to mechanical breakdowns of garbage trucks, the situation has started to improve after the hiring of eight refuse trucks from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works on a 12-month contract.
“The trucks were delivered last week and are already complementing our fleet. We are pleased to note that waste collection has significantly improved, and residents are beginning to see the difference,” he said.

Cllr Coltart stressed that maintaining cleanliness and functional infrastructure not only improves the quality of life for residents but also enhances Bulawayo’s image as an attractive destination for investors and tourists.
“A clean city attracts investment and promotes tourism. Every resident has a role to play in ensuring Bulawayo remains the City of Kings and Queens in both name and appearance,” he said.
Signature Suits spokesperson, Ms Alleta Nyathi, said their donation of six dustbins was meant to complement the council’s efforts in promoting a cleaner city.
“This donation represents our shared vision of a cleaner, more responsible Bulawayo. True progress happens when business and community work together for a better environment,” she said.
