The championships roar into life at Esigodini Agricultural College from tomorrow up to Tuesday next week with well over 150 players from the country’s 10 provinces expected to descend on the Matabeleland South college.
Yesterday, the Bulawayo provincial team had its final preparatory game against top side Archers.
“It was our final practice match and we would like to sincerely thank Archers for agreeing to play against us,” said captain of the A team and veteran player, Ndumiso Tshuma.
He said the match provided them with a perfect opportunity to fine-tune the squad before departure tomorrow morning.
Tshuma expressed hope that the team would do well this time around after a dismal performance at the 2011 edition of the championships, held at Falcon College.
“We are one of the four provinces that are seeded and that should increase our chances of doing well,” said Tshuma.
Darts kings Mashonaland West, Mashonaland East and Harare are the other seeded provinces after doing well in the Easter tournament that was held at Hillside Teachers College in April.
Unlike in league games, there will be no doubles so players will tackle each other over 36 legs with the first player to reach 19 becoming the winner.
At stake is the accumulation of points for selection into the national team.
Meanwhile, the organising secretary for the Matabeleland South Darts Association,
Maqhawe Moyo, said the province was ready to welcome visitors and preparations were at an advanced state.
“Dart boards should be in by end of day today. Accommodation for the players is in perfect shape,” said Moyo.
