BULAWAYO residents lost property worth $1,4 million in fire related incidents last year compared to $5,4 million worth of property that was destroyed in 2013, the city’s chief fire officer, Richard Peterson, has said.Peterson said ironically, the city recorded more fire incidents last year compared to 2013.

There were 663 fire incidents recorded in 2014 compared to 365 in 2013.

Two people died last year compared to 10 during the same period in 2013, Peterson said.

“Property worth more than $1,4 million was destroyed by fire last year.

“The city, however, recorded a decrease from 2013, whereby property worth $5,4 million was destroyed.

The city recorded an increase in fires by 81,6 percent, injuries were reduced by 60 percent and death reduction was 86 percent last year,” he said.

He attributed the decrease in value of property lost even as fire incicents increased to veld fires, which did not affect properties.

Peterson said 379 veld fires were attended to last year.

The month of August recorded the highest number of veld fires, as 81 cases were reported.

Only eight fire incidents were reported in December last year against 24 during the same period in 2013.

Peterson advised members of the public to be cautious when dealing with fire in order to minimise loss of life and property.

“We advise people to take the necessary steps that help reduce fire occurences. They should ensure that they’re safe from any fire occurrences. As fire services we’re going to continue with fire awareness campaigns. Let us fight together for a fire-free Bulawayo,” Peterson said.
