Zanu-PF staff members yesterday held a belated celebration of President Mnangagwa’s birthday at the party headquarters in Harare.
The staffers, led by director general Cde Thadius Chadenga, welcomed President Mnangagwa, who is the ruling party’s First Secretary, as he walked in to attend the revolutionary party’s 397th Politburo meeting.
They broke into song and dance as President Mnangagwa disembarked from his vehicle and walked towards the celebrating staff members, who sang “Happy Birthday.”
After a moment of singing, Cde Chadenga explained to President Mnangagwa that they had thought of holding a small celebration to appreciate the great work he was doing for them.
“They want to say Happy Birthday, belated as it may be. They also want to thank you for what you have been doing for them. We are equally happy with our conditions of service,” said Cde Chadenga, who later delivered presents to President Mnangagwa.
In his response, President Mnangagwa thanked the staff for their loving gesture.
“I am very happy for what you have done. It’s good to know that I have children who think about their father. I did not expect it,” said President Mnangagwa.
Later, Zanu-PF Politburo members also broke into song celebrating President Mnangagwa’s birthday when he walked into the auditorium where their meeting was held.
It was a brief celebration just before the commencement of the Politburo meeting.
President Mnangagwa celebrated his birthday on 15 September in Mvurwi, a day which coincided with Munhumutapa Day, whose main festival was held in Mvurwi, Mashonaland Central province.
The day honours the pre-colonial Mutapa empire and traditional governance, whose legacy is reminiscent of President Mnangagwa’s astute leadership.
The commemorations were held under the theme “Honouring the Past, Empowering the Present and Securing the Future.”
Munhumutapa Day has since been gazetted as a public holiday, a development that will give impetus to its importance.
