BULAWAYO is gearing up to host the national track championships at White City Stadium on 29 November.

The event will be used as a qualifier for the 2021 World Junior Championships to be held in Nairobi, Tokyo Olympic Games and other major regional as well as continental meets which will take place during next year’s athletics season.

Manuel Mpofu, the Bulawayo Athletics Board chairman said as the host province, they had done a lot of ground work to make sure that the event is a success and athletes are afforded the conducive environment considering that in a Covid-19 pandemic period.

According to Mpofu, some of the work done so far include securing the venue, ensuring that there is enough saniters and masks, sourcing for fumigation liquid which will be used to disinfect the venue before and after the event.

“Only one entry point will be used which is along Hyde Park Road for those accredited to access the venue, no spectators will be allowed in the venue only athletes and supporting staff will access the venue. Of course, media both electronic and print will be allowed access so that they will witness that we will be following the Covid-19 protocols,’’ Mpofu said.

Only five track events are taking place, these being 100m 200m 400m 800m and 5000m. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there are no field events and relays.

Provinces are entitled to enter only two athletes per event per province for both men and women. – @Mdawini_29.
