TWO suspected drug dealers from Bulawayo’s Cowdray Park suburb appeared in court yesterday after they were allegedly found in possession of 2 000 grammes of dagga, valued at ZWG6 000, without a licence or permit.
Desmond Mazani (46) and Irene Sipho Tongai (70) appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Archie Wochiwunga, facing charges of unlawful possession of dagga. Tongai also faces an additional charge of unlawful smoking of dangerous drugs.
The pair was remanded to tomorrow for a bail ruling.
Prosecutor Ms Audrey Kufandikanwe told the court that the incident occurred on August 30.
“On that date, at around 2PM, detectives on patrol received information that the accused persons were receiving dagga from their relative in South Africa via a cross-border transporter,” she said.
Acting on the tip-off, detectives proceeded to the accused persons’ residence. After identifying themselves, they conducted a search of the premises and recovered three sachets of dagga weighing 2 000 grammes.
The accused failed to produce a licence authorising them to possess or deal in dagga, leading to their arrest.
Ms Kufandikanwe further informed the court that Tongai was found smoking dagga when detectives arrived.
“The accused person was found smoking dagga at her residence by detectives, who had received the tip-off,” she said.
