LAST week’s road traffic accidents in Bulawayo delivered yet another painful reminder that one careless moment behind the wheel can change lives forever.
Two people lost their lives in separate accidents, while dozens of others were injured. Even more worrying, both incidents involved drivers who fled the scene instead of helping those who had been hurt.
Every driver has a legal and moral duty to stop after an accident, render assistance where possible and report the incident to the police. Leaving the scene not only delays emergency help but can also deny victims a fighting chance of survival.
Motorists are urged to drive at speeds that allow them to react safely to unexpected hazards such as potholes, pedestrians and other road users. Night-time driving requires extra caution, as visibility is reduced and pedestrians can be difficult to spot.
Pedestrians also have an important role to play in keeping our roads safe. When walking at night, wear bright or reflective clothing whenever possible, remain alert and avoid stepping into the path of oncoming vehicles.
Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. A few seconds of patience can save a lifetime of regret.
Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, Bulawayo police spokesperson, urges motorists to obey traffic laws, remain vigilant and never flee the scene of an accident.
Together, let’s make Bulawayo’s roads safer for drivers, passengers and pedestrians alike.
Remember: Arrive alive. Someone is waiting for you at home.
