Bulawayo Poly to host winter chess tournament

BULAWAYO Polytechnic will play host to a winter chess tournament this weekend. The first round is expected to start at 8am on Saturday. Registration is now open and expected to close tomorrow. All players are expected to register at 404 Kingdom Building. The joining fee is pegged at $5 for adults and $2 for scholars.
Last year’s ZEDCO winter chess winner Patrick Sibanda from Bulawayo Chess Club would be looking forward to returning to the top spot.

Tertiary institutions such as National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Midlands State University (MSU) as well as renowned high schools such as Sizane and Ihlathi are expected to participate in this edition.

Havard University student and former Bulawayo junior chess champion Hope Ndlovu has confirmed his participation in this year’s competition and he is promising fireworks.

Winner of the Hillside tournament and MSU student Elisha Thabov has also confirmed participation.
The tournament favourites in the women’s category are Busi Ncube from Bulawayo Polytechnic and Nomalungelo Mathe from Sizane High School.
Scholars to watch out in the men’s category are Victor Muchemwa and Archieford Matiringe from Gifford High School.

Patrice Sibanda, Nigel Mabiza and Eshward Mudumo might steal the show on Saturday in the men’s event.
Youngest player Sikhulile Ncube is tipped to do well.
