In an interview on Tuesday, the Resident Minister and Governor for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Cain Mathema said 200 tonnes of seed maize would be distributed at district level.
“We have received 200 tonnes of seed maize from the Presidential input scheme and the seed would be distributed at district level,” said Governor Mathema.
“Out of the 200 tonnes, 30 tonnes would be given to each district in the city and every Bulawayo resident regardless of political affiliation is expected to receive the maize.”
Governor Mathema said civil servants, church organisations and vulnerable groups have also received allocations that would be distributed fairly.
“We have allocated 20 tonnes to civil servants, 30 tonnes to special groups that include the elderly and people living with disabilities,” he said.
Governor Mathema said the province would also receive 400 tonnes of fertiliser from the President’s inputs scheme, which would be distributed equally.
“We are expecting about 400 tonnes of fertiliser from the President under the Presidential input scheme.
“The fertiliser would also be distributed equally to the people of Bulawayo,” he said.
President Mugabe launched the US$27 million presidential inputs scheme that will benefit 712 400 households countrywide.
Of the beneficiaries 616 000 households will receive food input packs, while the remaining 96 400 receive cotton input packs.
Chiefs will also receive some Compound D fertiliser donated by a company called Broad Haven Investments plus an additional 14 tonnes carry over from last year’s stocks.
Seed maize is being distributed according to different agro-ecological regions of the country.
During the 2008/9 season, the Presidential input scheme channelled US$3 million towards the programme and in the 2009/10 the scheme secured inputs worth US$9.7 million for 209 400 households.
For the 2010/11 season, 552 000 households received inputs worth US$33 035 785 under the scheme.
The inputs are procured from local seed houses such as Seed Co, Pannar, Pioneer and Agriseeds, while the local fertiliser industry supplies fertilisers.
