The endorsement of President Mugabe by Masvingo follows the same route taken by other provinces such as Matabeleland North, Midlands, Matabeleland South and Bulawayo.
The decision was taken at the party’s provincial conference in Masvingo town on Sunday.
Masvingo provincial chairman Cde Lovemore Matuke said the province had not moved an inch from its earlier confirmation that people were behind their best revolutionary cadre whose political pedigree was second to none.
“We have resolved that our most illustrious President remain our candidate for the presidency in the next elections. No objections were raised from the districts and we are happy that President Mugabe still commands a lot of respect in our province,” said Cde Matuke.
He said there were more resolutions that were passed, but some needed a review before being taken to the national conference.
Cde Matuke said they also resolved that all structures should conduct their primary elections early to allow losers to heal their wounds. “Of late we have experienced problems of disgruntled members who would have lost elections and that cause unnecessary problems within the party. We have resolved for early primary elections so as to avoid such a scenario,” he said.
Officially opening the provincial conference, the party’s national chairman, Cde Simon Khaya Moyo, called on party members in Masvingo to desist from imposing candidates in the harmonised elections scheduled for next year.
Cde Moyo said in 2008 the revolutionary party lost some seats to MDC formations owing to confusion that was allegedly caused by imposition of candidates. “We don’t want a repeat of 2008 when we lost some seats because some constituencies had imposed candidates. We want the people’s choices. Let the members choose candidates of their choice,” said Cde Khaya Moyo.
He also took the opportunity to denounce violence and urged party members to desist from engaging in activities that could put the party into disrepute. “As Zanu-PF we say no to violence. We don’t want violence and our message is clear but MDC-T is preaching violence, what kind of language is that when President Mugabe is calling for peace?” said Cde Khaya Moyo.
MDC-T has a record of violence as evidenced by events that took place ahead of its congress in Bulawayo early this year where its members attacked each other.
