THE City of Bulawayo will have an opportunity to reposition itself as an investment-ready, competitive and globally connected metropolitan authority when it participates in the Canton Fair in China next month.

The Canton Fair is the world’s largest comprehensive trade exhibition.

A delegation from the local authority will be part of the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC)’s trade mission to the Chinese fair,  providing the council a strategic platform to accelerate its industrial revival efforts.

The Canton Fair brings together manufacturers, exporters and buyers across diverse sectors, presenting a perfect opportunity for the city to advance its ongoing efforts to promote investment, industrial revival, international trade linkages and economic diplomacy in line with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 targets and the city’s economic development and investment promotion Strategy.

According to a council report released yesterday, Town Clerk Mr Christopher Dube told the General Purposes Committee that an invitation to participate in the trade mission had been received from ZNCC.

The local authority is a member of ZNCC, which is organising the mission with the support of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Zimbabwe.

“The City of Bulawayo has been invited to participate in this Trade Mission as part of its ongoing efforts to promote investment, industrial revival, international trade linkages and economic diplomacy in line with Vision 2030 and the City’s Economic Development and Investment Promotion Strategy,” Mr Dube said.

He said China remained one of Zimbabwe’s key strategic economic partners and a major source of investment, technology transfer, industrial equipment and infrastructure development.

“Participation in structured trade missions such as the ZNCC-led delegation to the Canton Fair provides the City of Bulawayo with a practical platform to engage potential investors, suppliers and development partners within priority sectors.

“Canton Fair offers direct access to Chinese manufacturers and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) across sectors relevant to Bulawayo’s industrial base, including manufacturing machinery, building and construction materials, electrical and electronic products, energy solutions, automotive components and agro-processing equipment,” Mr Dube added.

For a city historically regarded as Zimbabwe’s industrial hub, the trade exhibition comes at a critical time, as the council is intensifying efforts to reposition Bulawayo as a centre of manufacturing excellence,                          logistics, renewable energy and value addition.

“Participation by the City of Bulawayo would strengthen municipal-level economic diplomacy, supporting local industry retooling initiatives, and enhancing the City’s investment promotion efforts by directly engaging global suppliers and investors,” reads part of the report.

Mr Dube said the primary objectives of the City of Bulawayo’s participation in the ZNCC Trade Mission to China include “to promote Bulawayo as a preferred investment destination for manufacturing, logistics, energy and industrial development, identify potential Chinese investors, technology partners and suppliers aligned to the city’s priority economic sectors and explore opportunities for technology transfer, joint ventures and public-private partnerships that support industrial modernisation and service delivery.”

Additionally, the city seeks to benchmark industrial innovations, urban technologies and infrastructure solutions relevant to local government operations, support local businesses and MSMEs by facilitating future trade, sourcing and supply chain linkages, and strengthen international cooperation and economic diplomacy in line with national and municipal development objectives.

The town clerk noted that participation in the ZNCC Trade Mission to China presented several strategic benefits for the city, including direct exposure to global manufacturing and industrial supply chains critical to Bulawayo’s re-industrialisation agenda.

According to the report, expected benefits include “Opportunities to engage OEMs and technology providers for municipal infrastructure, energy efficiency, water, sanitation and waste management solutions.”

There is also significant scope to enhance the visibility of Bulawayo’s investment opportunities to international investors and financiers, as well as to strengthen collaboration with ZNCC and the private sector in advancing trade and investment promotion.

The trade mission programme will include attending and participating in the Canton Fair exhibitions and structured business-to-business matchmaking sessions facilitated by ZNCC and Chinese counterparts.

Council delegation will also participate in site visits and engagements with selected manufacturers and technology firms, hold networking sessions with international trade institutions, investors, business leaders and receive briefings on Chinese market access, trade regulations and investment frameworks.

The council expects the ZNCC trade mission to China to yield several key outcomes.

These include securing potential investors and suppliers for priority city projects, improving access to industrial machinery and technology solutions, strengthening international trade and investment networks, and enhancing Bulawayo’s positioning as an outward-looking and investment-ready city.

“The ZNCC Trade Mission to China provided a strategic and timely opportunity for the City of Bulawayo to advance its economic development, investment promotion and international co-operation agenda.

“Participation in the Canton Fair would support the City’s industrial revitalisation efforts while strengthening partnerships with the private sector and international stakeholders.

“By supporting this initiative, the City of Bulawayo would advance the objectives of Vision 2030 through strengthened international trade and investment engagement, accelerated industrial retooling and modernisation and the promotion of inclusive and sustainable economic growth,” the council said.

Participation in the ZNCC “Trade Mission and the Canton Fair would enable direct engagement with global Original Equipment Manufacturers and technology providers, support the re-industrialisation of Bulawayo’s manufacturing base, and facilitate access to cost-effective solutions for municipal infrastructure and service delivery.

“In doing so, the City will reinforce economic diplomacy efforts and position itself as an investment-ready, competitive, and globally connected metropolitan authority,” added the report.

With its industrial revival programme gathering momentum, the Canton Fair presents Bulawayo with a timely and strategic platform to attract fresh capital, modern technology and strategic partnerships, key ingredients in restoring the city’s status as Zimbabwe’s manufacturing powerhouse.
