A COUPLE in Pumula South in Bulawayo was left shell-shocked after their 21-month-old baby was stolen by unknown persons in dramatic fashion on Friday night.Wethembekile Dube was snatched from her parents’ bedroom at around 11pm while the couple had rushed outside to check who had smashed their window with a brick.

Moments later, Wethembekile’s mother, Finnishgale Mpofu, was greeted by a dropped blanket in the kitchen and she realised her baby had been kidnapped while they were outside.

The alleged baby thief took the baby and nothing else from the house.

Chronicle visited the grief-stricken family yesterday afternoon. Many residents had gathered to comfort them.

“I still cannot believe my child was taken from us in such a manner. We retired for bed on Friday and my wife was the last to come to bed and by then the baby was asleep. During the night at around 11pm I heard some noises coming from steel sheets near the bedroom.

“Suddenly a brick was thrown and it hit our window though no one was hurt. At that moment my wife and I went outside to check what was happening leaving Wethembikile asleep on the bed. A few minutes later my wife went back into the house and I heard her scream saying the baby was gone as she found a blanket in the kitchen,” said Maphehla Dube, the baby’s father.

“I am hoping God will intervene and that police will help us as we made a report that very night.”

Mpofu who could hardly talk, described her experience as the worst that could befall any human being.

“I thought such experiences were for movies only. They took my baby from me and I do not know where we are going to find her. She was the only baby I had,” said Mpofu who was trying to force down some spoonfuls of porridge.

“Wethembekile was kidnapped wearing a long-sleeved red dress with glitters with two T-Shirts, white and green beneath. She was also putting on yellow underwear and a pair of yellow stockings,” Mpofu said.

An unidentified resident who had come to see the couple said, “Surely these are the signs of the times. People have lost all humanity. I hope they will find the baby. It was going to be better if they had stolen anything else in the house but for the baby,” she said.

Police could not immediately comment on the strange incident yesterday.
