Sungura kingpin Alick Macheso’s manager, William Tsandukwa has blamed the media for downplaying the musician’s last album accusing them of unfairly labelling it a flop.Tsandukwa says the album was a great success just like his previous albums which earned him a place among Zimbabwe’s top five musicians.

Critics have described Macheso’s last offering, Kwatabva Mitinhu (Kure Kwekure) as his worst album so far.

The album is Macheso’s ninth in a career spanning 11 years.

However, Tsandukwa shifted the blame to the media which he said played a pivotal role in despising the album.

“This album did well just like all his previous albums.  It’s (you) media people who rushed to say it was a bad album before people listened to it.

“When we play tracks at shows, people sing along and enjoy the songs but honestly I don’t know who said it was a flop,” said Tsandukwa.

He said the album’s success could be highlighted by the fact that one of its tracks was voted song of the year last year.

“If the album was a flop, how on earth could two songs make it into the Top 50?  The people out there enjoy it very much, but the problem was with the media.  It is the fans who adjudged it as the best ahead of all other tracks in the country,” he said.

Quizzed on how many copies it sold, Macheso’s lieutenant said he had no actual figures because Last Power Studios collapsed soon after the album’s release.

Macharangwanda and Cynthia did well in the annual competition run by ZBC at the end of each year.

Critics said the seasoned musician lacked maturity in both lyrical content and instrumentals on the album.
Despite the criticism towards the album, Macheso (pictured right) has refused to admit that it was a flop.

The fiery guitarist who had been riding high with the Zora Butter dance before the “flopped” album has postponed the release of his tenth album several times.

Tsandukwa said fans can expect Macheso’s album in the next few weeks as he was already playing some of the tracks at his shows.

“The album was delayed by the closure of Last Power Studios and as such it was difficult for him to just release an album from any studio, so he has set up his own and very soon the album would be ready.

“As for the title, I cannot say now because, he is yet to decide on the name of the album but the tracks are ready,” he said.
