Outgoing ZNCC president Mr Trust Chikohora said they were currently working with the Standards Association of Zimbabwe to ensure compulsory testing of imported products to ascertain their quality.
“There is need to address the issue of standards in terms of imports. ZNCC is currently advocating for compulsory testing for quality through the Standards Association of Zimbabwe so that there is fair competition,” he said.
Economic Planning and Investment Promotion Minister Tapiwa Mashakada said Government is debating on the issue of protectionism.
“Government is still debating the issue of protectionism and might put in some measures which will possibly engage export countries to fend off retaliation,” he said.
Delegates who attended the congress said there is need to adopt protectionism since the cheap imports from Asian countries are posing unfair competition to the locally produced goods and services.
