BUZZ IN CAMP EXCITES CHEVRONS HEAD COACH

CHEVRONS coach Justin Sammons says there is a buzz in camp as they prepare to host World Test Champions South Africa who flew into Bulawayo yesterday.

The two sides will battle in two Tests with the first match getting underway at Queens on Saturday.

The Proteas arrived in Zimbabwe having beaten Australia in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s earlier this month, breaking an ICC trophy drought that spanned for 27 years.

Zimbabwe have been in camp preparing for the challenge of their African neighbours and Sammons says the players are eager to rise to the occasion.

“There’s a real buzz around the squad. I think they’re very excited. I’m super excited for the challenge that lies ahead and the guys are amped for it.

“They’re looking forward to testing themselves and showing what they’re capable of. I think they really want to make a statement over the next couple of weeks.”

The home side’s preparations have been to focus on building intensity and volume while ensuring all fundamentals are being addressed before shifting to specific tactical planning.

Despite the demanding sessions, Sammons said the players had responded with enthusiasm and purpose.

“Right now, it’s more about making sure we’re covering all our bases . . . it’s more around the volume, and then we get a little bit more specific as we head closer to the Test.

“The attitude is good. It’s always good. We can never fault the attitude. They’re always wanting to get the most out of each other and improve as much as they can, and again, they’ve shown that over the last few days.”

The second and final Test of series will also be played at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo from 6 July before the teams move to Harare for a T20I tri-series that will also feature New Zealand.

Meanwhile, THE senior national ladies cricket team will visit Ireland next month for a five-match white-ball series, Zimbabwe Cricket has confirmed.

The Lady Chevrons’ tour itinerary includes three T20 Internationals to be played in Dublin on July 20, 22 and 23, followed by two One-Day Internationals scheduled for Belfast on July 26 and 28.

This marks another important step for the lady Chevrons following their historic visit to the United States in April, as they continue to build international experience and test themselves against established opponents.

“This tour presents us with an excellent opportunity to challenge ourselves against quality opposition in tough conditions,” head coach Walter Chawaguta said.

“Ireland will provide just the right platform to sharpen our skills, build momentum and solidify our combinations.”

The series also forms part of Zimbabwe Women’s preparations for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier Division One, which will be held in Namibia from August 31 to 6 September.

In the lead-up to the Ireland tour, ZC has scheduled a series of Regional Games in Harare to aid squad selection and preparation.

Northerns and Southerns sides will play three 50-over matches on 24, 26 and 28 June, followed by three T20 games on 30 June, 1 and 2 July.

The final squad will assemble for a training camp beginning 5 July before departing for Ireland on 16 July.

“The Regional Games are designed to give players competitive match practice and a chance to stake a claim for selection,” Chawaguta said.

“Every session and match from now on is important as we prepare not only for Ireland but also for the qualifiers in Namibia and our debut in the ICC Women’s Championship early next year.” ZimCricket/SABC
