Government has set up a Cabinet Committee to spearhead Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Dr Walter Mzembi’s campaign for the post of United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO)’s secretary general.

Addressing journalists during the launch of a campaign website created for him by the Ministry of Information, Communication Technology and Courier Services, Dr Mzembi said Government was rallying fully behind his campaign for the UNWTO position.

“All Government facets under their different mandates have learnt the task of the campaign, and I can safely say Government is fully behind me in as far as the candidature is concerned.

“I have a committee from Cabinet currently present whose mandate is to ensure that all the grey areas of my campaign are straightened hence, today we have the launch of this campaign website that was developed by the ICT ministry.”

Dr Mzembi added that the campaign website set up for him was meant to be a hub of information for the global constituencies, which were targeted by his campaign.

He said following his endorsement by Sadc, he had returned into the country to brief Government and to ensure that the country would rally behind him until the final elections in 2018.

Meanwhile, more African countries continue to endorse Minister Mzembi for the post.

“Mozambique, Equatorial Guinea, Senegal and Namibia have just affirmed their decision to endorse me as their candidate for the post through written endorsements,” said Minister Mzembi.

He added that he had several invitations from some African countries and beyond who were looking forward to his global tourism vision.

“Starting from this coming Wednesday (tomorrow), we will be going to outreach campaigns in countries which include Egypt, Tunisia and Kenya. These countries are members of the UNWTO committee, which is comprised of 32 countries.”

“I was also invited as a guest of honour to the Atlanta for Diaspora Tourism Awards, which is a big indication of the regard Zimbabwe’s candidature has in the world,” he elaborated.

Dr Mzembi said the task that confronted him as a candidate of the UNWTO position was demanding since the UNWTO was one of the 17 specialised agencies under the UN hence, the campaign needed to be taken seriously.
