ZIMBABWE’S sole representative at the South African Open championships, Ryan Cairns, had an indifferent start to the event after he carded a four-over-par 76 after yesterday’s opening round.
Cairns, who had a hamstring injury, returned for the opening event of the year which is taking place at Glendower Golf Club in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The event, which is part of the European Tour, attracted several international players and is made up of 156 players.
Cairns, who was exempted due to the injury after struggling for the better part of last year, still has a chance to bounce back after today’s round. The Zimbabwean started on a bright note as he opened with a birdie before he had a par in the first two holes. Par three-hole number three proved difficult for the Borrowdale Brooke golfer as he had a double bogey on his way to complete the first nine on two-over-par.
Three consecutive bogeys on the back nine proved too much for Cairns who revered on holes 13 and 15 where he carded some birdies.
Veteran South African Ernie Els goes into today’s second round leading the event on five-under-par-67 together with former Zimbabwe Open winner J’be Krigers, Lasse Jansen and Colin Nel.
