RYAN Cairns is struggling in the PGA Tour Latinoamérica after three rounds as he lies in 49th place in his inaugural qualifying tournament at the La Planicie Lima Country Club in Peru. Cairns made a slow start on the opening day when he carded 75 which he followed by a 73 and a 75 for a seven-under-par.
Cairns needs a strong performance in the last round in Lima to finish the tournament in the top 20, which would give him full exemption for the 2014 PGA Tour Latinoamérica.
The final round of the tournament was set to start late yesterday.
The PGA Tour Latinoamérica is a third level professional golf tour which is a rung behind the US PGA Tour and the Web.com Tour.
However, it is the first pathway to the US PGA Tour and its top five, in the tour’s Order of Merit, earn status on the Web.com Tour.
The top 25 players on the Web.com Tour’s money list are given US PGA Tour membership for the next season.
The 2014 season of PGA Tour Latinoamérica will consist of 16 events in 10 countries across Latin America.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s leading professional golfer Brendon de Jongé will be hoping to make another cut on the US PGA Tour at the Humana Challenge in La Quinta, California, US.
The Humana Challenge went into the second round late yesterday at the PGA West Palmer Private Course and the winner will walk away with US$1 026 000.
De Jongé was tied in 48th place after a three-under-par 69 in the first round.
He trailed pacesetter Patrick Reed by six shots.
