YOUTHS have been urged to promote development in their communities.
Speaking on the sidelines of a clean-up campaign held at Mpilo Hospital on Friday, Lupane State University’s information and public relations officer, Mr Zwelithini Dhlamini said youths should emulate contributions done by the university’s students in alleviating the plight of the community.
A total of 15 students conducted the clean-up exercise and donated 10 dustbins to Mpilo.
The clean-up exercise, running under the theme “LSU history makers” was aimed at returning the health institution to its high standards of cleanliness that it was famous for.
Mr Dhlamini said the students involved in the exercise were beneficiaries of the Capernaum Trust Foundation. The clean-up exercise is one of the initiatives meant to instill a sense of responsibility among the youths.
He said the students brought up the initiative.
“As an institution we feel very humbled by the gesture that our students are aware that they are beneficiaries of other individuals’ generosity therefore they have seen it important to also extend a gesture of help to Mpilo.
“We hope that the dustbins donated will go a long way in assisting the institution in maintaining cleanliness,” he said.
Mr Dhlamini applauded the students saying social responsibility is part of the university’s values.
“We hope that after they finish their studies they will remain with the spirit of helping the nation,” he said.
He appealed to other stakeholders emulate the students.
“I would like to encourage our youths to be part of voluntary exercises that promote development in their communities,” he said.
A representative of the students, Ms Sharon Kasiwake said they have been taught the spirit of giving back to the community.
“As you are aware, we the beneficiaries of the Capernaum Trust Foundation so we are giving back to the community. We are children of our guardians Mr Strive and Mrs Tsitsi Masiyiwa. We are basically doing what we have been taught,” she said.
Mpilo Hospital health promotion officer Mr Ozias Ndlovu expressed gratitude to the students saying they put aside their important studies and sacrificed their time to clean up the institution.
“The dust bins donated will go a long way in assisting the institution,” he said.
