Call to improve prison conditions

the Law Society of Zimbabwe, Minister Chinamasa said there was need for stakeholders to create a more humane environment in prisons.
The minister said his ministry had been carrying out an exercise on the prison conditions and the findings showed that the standards and conditions were very low.
Minister Chinamasa said the findings were yet to be tabled before Cabinet.
“Conditions in the prisons are not good. Yes they have slightly improved from three years back, but I am still not happy.
“We need new pots, plates, cups and many others for the priso-              ners.
“It is important that we create conditions, which promote the dignity of those who are in prison. Our idea is to create a prison whose conditions are humane for everyone.
“We have done a study on the prison conditions in Zimbabwe and the findings are going to be tabled before Cabinet soon,” he said.
Some prison officers, the minister said, were having uniform problems to an extent that they relied on a single pair that was washed during weekends.
“At times our prison officers do not get enough uniforms. Instead of having an assortment of uniforms, they end up having one pair that they wash at weekends,” he said.
