Call to support caregivers

Opening the national caregivers’ summit in Seke, Dr Stamps said it was important for the Government to look at the possibility of initiating the development of a Home-Based Care policy framework to address some of the challenges facing caregivers.

“Caregivers have suffered lack of recognition, lack of appreciation, lack of remuneration and discriminated in national resources distribution. Caregivers must be accorded the right to tell their own story and represent themselves at all decision making platforms that concern them,” he said.

Dr Stamps said there was need for continuous engagement to share ideas.
“The time is now not tomorrow, not next month, not next year even next decade but now. Government must look at how best caregivers can be incorporated into our current socio-economic empowerment programs,” he said.

Where appropriate, he said, the Government could incorporate caregivers by allocating them land, supporting them to start some income generating projects as well as facilitating them to receive their fair share of community share ownership trust proceeds. Government could also offer small scale mining concessions to caregivers.
