THE Mr and Ms Mufakose body-building contest organising committee on Saturday held a “Say no to drugs” campaign which saw over 1 000 people turning out.
The campaign was part of the build-up to this year’s muscleman contest.
As part of the preparations, the organisers highlighted the downside of drug and substance abuse among the youths.
“As the organising committee, we were impressed with the turn-out during Saturday’s campaign and we are hopeful that we will have more support before the main contest.
“Body-building is a good sport that encourages discipline and we are happy that there was an overwhelming response from the communities and corporates,” said the organising committee patron, Tongai Nheta.
The body-building contest which is set for next Saturday has been getting support from the Mufakose community and some corporates.
Mr and Ms Mufakose’s contest made its grand return, after a 14-year hiatus, in 2022 with four categories — namely the juniors, seniors, open men’s competition, and the bikini modelling categories.
This year the tournament will return bigger and better with the organising committee patron Tongai Nheta expressing delight with the support they are getting ahead of the third edition.
“We managed to revive Mr and Ms Mufakose’s Body-building and Modelling contest in 2022 through a trust that is seeking to revive both the sport and the Mufakose community gym.
“We are happy with the Mr and Ms Mufakose anti-drug and substance abuse campaign where we patrolled the streets of Mufakose and Budiriro ahead of the body-building contest.
“We will have the main contest on Saturday and we saw it prudent to enlighten the community on the effects of drug abuse which is now rampant in our communities.
“This year the trust has managed to bring on board upcoming musicians, traditional dancers, models, dancers who will be under the tutelage of Selemani ‘Majuice’ Mupochi.
“This year we are looking to partner with Croco Motors, Shainstar Investments, Storm Acres, and Guzzlers among others.
“We are still open for big corporates to come and partner with us and help the youths to abstain from drugs through various donations in cash or kind. At the moment we are also looking forward to taking some of identified youths whom we want to take through rehabilitation,” said Nheta.
The return of the competition is part and parcel of efforts to revive both the sport and the Mufakose Community Gym.
Two-time champion Andrew “Ndux” Nyamandi will once again be expected to be at his best in the senior men’s category.
