CAPS plot revival

WHILE many Premier Soccer League clubs remain trapped in frantic pre season negotiations, CAPS United have already moved ahead, laying down the early foundations for their 2026 campaign and projecting rare stability and clear planning.

The Harare giants, bruised by nerve testing relegation battles in recent seasons, are quietly pointing towards a clean break from that unsettled chapter.

Their biggest signal came late last year with the appointment of Takesure Chiragwi as head coach, a decision wrapped up early enough to free the technical team to focus on squad balance, conditioning, and direction rather than last minute scrambling.

“As a team we are ready. Everyone is excited and looking forward to the new season. We believe the team will make an impact as the club have resourced the team,” said club CEO Morton Dodzo.

That sense of order has been driven by firm leadership from the top.

Club president Farai Jere is credited with overseeing the technical changes and backing them with funding aimed at pushing CAPS United forward.

The timing matters.

For too long, the club has lived close to the trapdoor, sharing last season’s survival anxiety with fellow giants Dynamos and Highlanders.

The rise of ambitious, well funded challengers such as reigning champions Scottland has jolted the league’s traditional heavyweights into action.

CAPS United secured safety with two matches to spare last season, while Dynamos and Highlanders were dragged into a final day scrap to preserve their status.

This early, organised approach to pre-season suggests CAPS United want to send a different message this time.

What was once a club garden clouded by doubt now looks calmer as they aim to turn preparation into results and re establish themselves among the league’s contenders.

The club has already secured the signatures of Nyasha Gurende, Talent Chamboko, Richard Hachiro, Obriel Chirinda, Kudzai Chigwida, Bret Amidu, McDonald Makuwe, Delic Murimba, Obriel Chirinda, Davison Marowa, Chawananga Kawonga and goalkeeper Wallace Magalane.

Next week, on January 12, CAPS United officially begin their season, a date Chiragwi says will allow him to properly assess his squad.

“Now I am on holiday, and starting work on January 12 with the boys. To be fair, it will be only then that we can speak anything tactical and about the team,” said Chiragwi.

Despite working quietly, Zimpapers Sports Hub understands the club is preparing for a significant overhaul, with retention guided strictly by the coach’s recommendations.

The club has already begun compensating players whose contracts are being terminated, with some settlements already completed.

  1. We have heard the same promises from CAPS United in the past three seasons only to find chaos reigning right from the start. Lest we forget, in the later part of last season, the same team announced a big sponsorship from a certain financial institution whose headquarters were claimed to be outside the country only to learn that it was all air with no substance. Caps United has become notorious for promising what they cannot achieve.
