CAPS Utd to unveil new board

members.
Club chief executive, Maxwell Mironga, who is involved in the day-to-day running of the club, will report to the board, which is expected to be unveiled next week.

“Football is now business and should be operated like any other set-up. So, the board should have people who should be advising and improving the brand.

“We have been operating without an executive for the past years and we are not going to set up one but we will have a board.

“This is the first time we will have a board at CAPS United, in past it just used to be an advisory board.

“CAPS United is rebuilding, it is a process and we have started our preparations on a low note as we are going to use juniors this season, so they need to slowly adapt and we are doing our pre-season differently,” said Phiri.

CAPS United were set to hold a press conference in Harare yesterday but, for the second week running, the media briefing was cancelled without due notice being given.

In the previous seasons, CAPS United have toured the Lowveld for training camps and last year, travelled to South Africa to play Mamelodi Sundowns.

This season CAPS United will restrict its preparations to Harare and will use the match against Sundowns to assess themselves.

“We are confident we will do well against Sundowns, remember last year we beat them in Polokwane and we have just blended our team with youth, otherwise three quarters of the team played last year and should do well,” said Phiri.

CAPS United have been forced to tighten their belts, and look for alternative sources of funds, after vice-president, Farai Jere, who provided most of the funding for the team, walked away last month.

Phiri refused to shed light on a prospective partner who may be joining the ship nor could he be drawn to comment on the departure of Jere, saying he will only do so when “the time is ripe”.
He said while their thrust would be on the juniors this season, they were likely to secure one or two high-profile players.

Meanwhile, after conducting his first session yesterday, CAPS United caretaker coach Mkhupali “Mr Cooper” Masuku said the team was aiming for a top-eight finish this season.

The coach, who missed the first day of training, had a workout with a largely unchanged squad from last season.

The club will finish their trials this morning and sign a number of young players who have impressed the technical team during the past three days.

Masuku said the club will come out with a comprehensive list of the Makepekepe players at the end of this month.

“The players we are looking at and whom we would be signing are Under-22 players only. The rest that are here, they are only trying their luck.

“We will come up with a list of all the players at the end of the month and cannot say much at the moment. We are looking at finishing in the top eight this season.

“And from these trials we are looking at players to cover all the departments,” said Masuku.
