A CHINHOYI woman died on the spot while another was seriously injured when they were run over by a car that veered off the road as the driver tried to avoid a mentally-ill pedestrian.
Valery Kabasa was standing outside Bethel Pharmacy where she works on Sunday afternoon when a Mazda 323 driven by Shadreck Mukumbi hit the curb and smashed into another car before running over her.
Police said the car stopped when it crashed into the pharmacy, causing extensive damage to the building.
Kabasa died on the spot while ano-ther person was seriously injured.
The woman was expected to be buried yesterday at Chinhoyi Cemetery.
In another accident, two passengers died on the spot when the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and threw them onto the tarmac.
The driver was reportedly trying to avoid a tractor and a pick-up truck that had been involved in an earlier accident along the Lions Den-Mhangura Road.
The two passengers were taken to Makonde Christian Hospital but died on admission.
Meanwhile, the Kadoma Municipality has denied allegations that it was partly responsible for a traffic accident that occurred at Waverly Bus Stop on February 18, 2011 in which two people died and 11 were injured.
In a statement yesterday, the local authority said a bus driver refused to pay the council rank fee of US$5 and as he tried to flee municipal police he ploughed into a group of people.
“Council Civil Protection staff and the ZRP as well as other well-wishers promptly attended to the injured and deceased.
“Kadoma City Council, in terms of its social responsibility policy, assisted in the burial of the deceased by providing free graves.
“This does not in any way mean that Kadoma City Council was responsible for causing the accident.”
Police are still investigating the matter.
