ELEVEN people died in three separate road accidents on Thursday and yesterday, police said.
Yesterday morning, near Shangani, a sedan heading to Bulawayo burst a tyre, left its lane and smashed into an oncoming car.Five people died on the spot and a sixth victim succumbed to his injuries on admission to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH).
The accident occurred at about 10AM at the 341km peg along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.
National Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said: “A Honda Fit, which was travelling towards Bulawayo with five occupants, burst its tyre and encroached onto the lane of the Nissan Blue Bird which was travelling in the opposite direction with four occupants.
“Four people from the Honda Fit and the driver of the Nissan Blue Bird died on the spot while three passengers and the driver of the Honda Fit were seriously injured and referred to UBH.”
Snr Asst Comm Charamba said four other people died in another accident on Thursday along the Mutare-Chimanimani Road.
She said the driver of a Zimbabwe National Army truck with 16 passengers on board had a side-swipe with an Atico Benz, which was travelling in the same direction. The army truck veered off the road to the right and overturned, throwing out all the passengers before landing on its roof.
“Three passengers from the truck died on the spot while a fourth died on admission at Mutare Provincial Hospital,” added Snr Asst Comm Charamba.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo told The Chronicle that a man died in the city centre early yesterday morning after losing control of his BMW while coming from a nightclub.
The dead man has been named as Herbert Mabika.
Police said Mabika appeared to have lost control of the vehicle at the intersection of Fife Street and Connaught Avenue at around 5AM. The car rolled once before smashing into a tree.
A friend, who only gave his name as Terrence, said Mabika had just recovered from another accident that he was involved in sometime last year.
