A TOP police officer has said that cars impounded by municipal cops have to first pass through a police station before these vehicles are taken to the municipality’s yard.
Officer Commanding Harare province, Commissioner Maxwell Chikunguru, said that only traffic cops in uniform are authorised to arrest motorists suspected of breaking traffic laws.
He was speaking through Harare province police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza.
“A number of motorists are now in the festive mood and some of them will be robbed by bogus police officers,” said Comm Chikunguru.
“Let it be known that all police traffic officers will be in uniform and none of them will be expected to arrest any motorist for traffic offences while they are in civilian attire.
“Furthermore, all arrested motorists cannot be led to the Council Yard without passing through a police station where a District Police Officer then authorises the impounding of the vehicles to safe places.
“Police visibility will be increasing by day to make sure members of the public are safe.
“Police check points will be there and we are urging motorists to fix their vehicles ahead of the festive season to avoid road accidents.
“Bus drivers must have proper documents that include passenger, vehicle insurances and route permits.
“Families intending to travel must make sure their vehicles are roadworthy, licensed and drivers to be licensed and avoid travelling during the night.”
Commissioner Chikunguru is expected to address long distance bus operators this week and engage commuter omnibus operators next week on road rules and regulations.
Police yesterday urged members of the public to join them in fighting crime, including corruption, and reducing road accidents.
