FIFA have finally responded to the on-going Asiagate saga and directed that all individuals wishing to appeal against the bans imposed on them by Zifa should exhaust all domestic channels before seeking recourse with the world soccer governing body.

The world body also expressed gratitude to Zifa for undertaking an exercise to investigate allegations of match-fixing and gave the association three major conditions they would want them to satisfy in line with the Fifa disciplinary code. Fifa also requested Zifa to furnish them with more details on the manner in which they had effected life bans on 15 individuals they alleged were the masterminds in the match-fixing scandal.

Asiagate: To punish or to rehabilitate?

THE biggest story in recent days has been the punishment given to players and officials who took part in match-fixing, now popularly known as Asiagate. The deals took place in a number of Asian countries and in Kenya during the Cecafa tournament between 2007 and 2009, and after the Zifa Independent Ethics Committee presented its findings and recommendations to the board last week, and the Zifa board announced the first batch of sanctions against 15 individuals, which happened to be life bans from all forms of football activities, a lot of was said about this.

Someone said on Facebook, “When a leopard wants to eat its cubs it first accuses them of smelling like goats.” I’m not sure who was being referred to as the leopard, but I want to believe the Zifa board would not want to eat its own cubs as it were, and I hope all the people implicated in the Asiagate reports are not smelling like goats, because that would be disastrous.
