HWANGE-based Roman Catholic college, Don Bosco Technical College, has extended a helping hand to the local Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services (ZPCS) by offering vocational training courses to inmates.
This initiative aims to equip inmates with essential skills that will aid their reintegration into society upon their release.
Speaking during a recent graduation ceremony, Don Bosco Technical College principal, Father Simba Muza highlighted the importance of their partnership with ZPCS.
“We have established a collaboration where selected inmates come to our college to receive free training in various skills. Courses offered include bricklaying, dressmaking, and other technical skills that empower them for a better future,” he said.
At the end of their training, inmates are provided with starter tools, enabling them to pursue small businesses or seek employment after their release.
“It’s an annual programme where we enrol inmates maintaining an average intake of 10 per cycle.
“This initiative, not only emphasises skill development but also fosters hope and self-reliance among inmates,” said Fr Muza.
He said the initiative is crucial in changing the narrative around incarceration, showcasing the potential for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
“With continued support from institutions like Don Bosco, inmates can aspire to lead productive lives beyond prison walls,” said Fr Muza.
Simbarashe Sibanda, an inmate at Hwange Prison, said he was thankful for the life-changing opportunity.
“I have only a few months left in prison, and the college has offered me a diploma in bricklaying.
“When I started my sentence, I never thought I would come out with such skills.
“I am truly grateful for this opportunity,” he said.
Don Bosco Technical College not only provides vocational training but is also affiliated with the Higher Education Examination Council (HEXCO), ensuring that the qualifications offered are recognised in the job market.
