Catholics converge for annual pilgrimmage

Pilgrimages, a journey in faith, evoke Christians’ journey towards heaven and are traditionally special occasions for renewal in prayer and to honour God.

In an interview on Thursday, Archbishop Alex Thomas said 24 parishes from the Bulawayo archdiocese would take part in the pilgrimage to celebrate the role of Mary the Mother of God in Christians’ lives.

“On this day that is when we celebrate the role of Mary the mother of Jesus in our journey of faith.

“She was instrumental in the life of Jesus therefore we need her to accompany us in our journey of faith,” said Archbishop Thomas.

He said all human beings were on a heavenly journey to meet God and therefore there was a need for unity of purpose among all churches to assist each other in that journey.

“We have to journey together and help each other in faith. If there are some who are weak in faith we need to help them be strong, and this is the purpose of a pilgrimage,” said Archbishop Thomas.

Proceedings for the pilgrimage started yesterday evening with a celebration of mass and the citation of the rosary.

Today there will be another mass followed by a healing session.

Pope Benedict XVI representative to Zimbabwe Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop George Kocherry would celebrate the high mass tomorrow.

“This year’s pilgrimage is special in the sense that we will be officially commissioning Our Lady of Fatima church whose construction was completed recently,” said Archbishop Thomas.

He said non Roman Catholic members were welcome to participate in the annual pilgrimage.

“There is another pilgrim under Bulawayo archdiocese at Empandeni in Mangwe and we will be going there in October,” said Archbishop Thomas.
