CBC win CHISZ League

CHRISTIAN Brothers College clinched their third Conference of Heads of Independent Schools in Zimbabwe (CHISZ) Soccer League title on Thursday when they beat St Midlands Christian College 4-3 on penalties in the final.

The match was played at Midlands Christian College in Gweru. CBC made it into the final after beating St John’s 2-0 in the first semi-final while MCC proceeded courtesy of a 1-0 win over St George’s in the other semi-final.

St George’s took the third spot after beating St John’s in the third place playoff. The four teams made it into the finals after being part of the top two in their respective regional leagues.

CBC and MCC emerged as the two top teams in the CHISZ Southern Region eight-team league while St George’s and St John’s were at the apex of the Northern Region league that features seven teams.

CBC’s teacher in charge of football, Dr Ntandoyenkosi Sibindi said they were excited on bagging the third CHISZ football title since the league was formed in 2013.

“We are quite excited about getting our third title it shows that we have been a lot of work on the football front, the boys played really well, they were focused and managed to produce the results.

“We are also happy that Rodney Nyadza, who scored a brace in our semi-final match, the golden boot award for the second year running although last year we came out fourth,” he said.

Sibindi said former Highlanders defender Noel Kaseke had been assisting them during his time at home and feels his contribution had a positive effect in their campaign.

He said Kaseke who is now coaching in the United Arab Emirates has been training the players for the past two years.

CBC won their first CHISZ in the first year the league was launched in 2013 and they clinched it again in 2015. Peterhouse College has won it twice, in 2014 and last year while MCC won it in 2016.
