A TOTAL of 31 traffic signals controlled intersections were upgraded and as part of ongoing scheduled maintenance.
There are currently 69 signalised intersections within the CBD of Harare.
At present 48 (69%) are operational and the rest (31%) are-non-functional due to various reasons and challenges namely:
(a) Faulty controllers and associated accessories — Robert Mugabe/Simon Muzenda (formerly Fourth Street); Robson Manyika/Simon Muzenda.
(b) Vandalism and theft of equipment— Herbert Chitepo/Simon Muzenda; Orr Street./Robson Manyika.
(c) Accident damages on equipment.- R. Mugabe/ Simon Nujoma (formerly Second Street).
Obsolete equipment giving unreliable operation and frequent faults.
(d) Traffic signals decommissioned during road dualisation projects under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development road projects— N. Mandela/J.Nyerere, Sam Nujoma/Herbert Chitepo.
The City of Harare is working flat out to resuscitate the existing non-functional installations.
The long-term plans in place to holistically address the traffic challenges in the city is through the installation of a Traffic Management System, a modern system that ensures coordination and synchronisation of traffic signals to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
The envisaged system will also provide for surveillance and traffic enforcement which will also ensure enhanced revenue collection and compliance with traffic regulations.
