Elderly people at Chengetanai Old People’s Home in Chinhoyi got an early Christmas present recently after a local commercial bank donated food hampers and clothes.
The bank’s donation was in response to distressed calls for assistance.
CBZ Chinhoyi branch manager Mrs Nyaradzo Mandingaisa said the bank stepped in to cover some of the critical requirements at the home.
“We realised that there could be some gaps at the home where our elderly people who raised us are living,” she said.
“They look up to us as their children and we should chip in whenever we can.”
There were media reports recently that the home had run out of food, resulting in some elderly people allegedly being victimised for leaking the information to the Press.
The donated items included bags of maize, flour, rice, meat, cooking oil, beans, cordials, sugar, cabbages, chunks, soap and clothes, among others.
The home’s project manager, Mr Lucky Nyanda, said the donation was timely and will give the elderly something to cheer about during the festive season.
