The body of the late national hero and former CIO director, Cde Walter Basopo, has left Chinhoyi for Harare, where he is set to be buried at the National Heroes Acre tomorrow.

The body lay in state at his Riverside home in Chinhoyi overnight and was airlifted from Chinhoyi High School en route to Charles Gumbo Barracks in Harare.

Relatives, Government officials and service chiefs, among others, bade farewell to the late national hero at Chinhoyi High School grounds this morning.

In a symbolic gesture, Cde Basopo’s relatives handed over the casket to State pallbearers to signal that all proceedings will now be led by the State.

His brother, Mr Brain Miriri, hailed the Government for conferring Cde Basopo with national hero status.

“We thank President Mnangagwa, the ruling party and the Government for honouring our brother with national hero status,” he said.
