PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has declared the late popular war veteran, Cde Amos Chinyamutangira, who lost his life in a hit-and-run accident last Friday a liberation war hero.
Cde Chinyamutangira (63) died on the spot at 9 Miles, along the Mutare-Masvingo Road.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Martin Rushwaya, signed by ZANU PF Secretary General, Dr Obert Mpofu confirmed the conferment the liberation war hero status on late Cde Chinyamutangira.
“His Excellency, the President and First Secretary of ZANU (PF), Cde ED Mnangagwa has conferred Liberation War Hero status to the late Cde Amos Chinyamutangira, who died on the 29th of August 2025. He will be buried at Mutare Provincial Heroes Acre.”
The late Cde Chinyamutangira will be laid to rest at the provincial heroes’ shrine at 2pm.
The conferment of liberation war hero status on the late Cde Chinyamutangira is a fitting recognition of his unwavering dedication to the liberation struggle and contribution to the nation after independence.
Cde Chinyamutangira, affectionately known as Amos, was a devoted reader of The Manica Post and highly respected within his community for his humility and strong bonds with fellow war veterans.
At the time of his death, he was en-route to Mutare to collect his war veterans’ allowances.
In an interview, his niece, Ms Rumbidzai Chinyamutangira, who had earlier confirmed his passing, said the family was devastated, but deeply touched by the honour.
“As a family, we are humbled that his sacrifice and contribution to Zimbabwe’s liberation have been recognised. It brings us comfort knowing he will rest among his fellow heroes,” she said.
