Zanu-PF Central Committee member and Senator for Zvimba Cde Virginia Muchenje, who died in Harare last Friday, has been declared a liberation war heroine.Cde Muchenje (66) had been battling cancer for some time. Zanu-PF Secretary for Administration Dr Ignatius Chombo told The Sunday Mail yesterday, “I have informed the Mashonaland West executive that the party has accepted their request to make her a liberation war heroine.

“She has a long-standing history with the party, from her days as a youth. She was a leader in the commissariat of the province for the past 15 years. At one time, she was provincial chair of the Women’s League. “She was a stalwart in Zvimba and worked very closely with the late National Heroine, Cde Sabina Mugabe, for the party’s programme in the area and the province.”

Dr Chombo added, “She was loyal to the party until her death. One thing that stands out about her is that she never campaigned for any position. She only assumed a position in the provincial executive and as a Senator after the people approached her to take up the posts.”

Born on August 7 1950, Cde Muchenje held several party posts since 1981, and rose through the ranks to become Central Committee member in 2000. Dr Chombo said she will be buried at the Mashonaland West Provincial Heroes’ Acre in Chinhoyi tomorrow.
