Ceiling crawler nabbed after student loot spree

A 25-YEAR-OLD man from Kariba has been sentenced to 24 months in prison after a daring theft spree at the National Railways of Zimbabwe student hostels in Bulawayo.

Bethe Matsa appeared before Bulawayo Magistrate Maxwell Ncube, who handed down a 24-month sentence with six months suspended on condition of good behavior, leaving an effective 18 months behind bars.

According to Prosecutor Mehluli Ndlovu, Matsa struck on 25 July, first targeting room 58 at Rofac. He allegedly entered the room through the ceiling and stole an HP laptop and an Acer laptop belonging to Malvern Matsa. He was caught trying to escape. The stolen items were valued at US$470 and were all recovered.

On the same day, Matsa struck again, climbing into room 60 at Rofac where Boikuto Myo was staying. He allegedly stole a cooler bag, a chargeable light, a black jacket, and a pack of noodles. He was caught in the act trying to flee. The stolen items, valued at US$39, were also recovered.
