Celebrated photographer Calvin Dondo to be buried at Warren Hills Cemetery

Affable visual artist, photographer and freelancer Calvin Dondo, who died at the weekend at Mvurwi Hospital, will be buried on Tuesday at Warren Hills Cemetery in Harare.

Dondo, renowned for bringing the World Press Photo celebrations to Zimbabwe, had been unwell for some time. He was 62.

Charles Dondo, the family spokesperson and brother of the esteemed photographer, described his death as a significant loss to the industry.

“He was a pillar of the family and a quiet person who enjoyed his work,” he said.

“We are burying him this afternoon (Tuesday September 23, 2025) at Warren Hills Cemetery. We have lost a loving brother, father and genius all in one.”

Dondo, who is survived by three daughters, was a well-known artist who studied photography at Harare Polytechnic from 1985 to 1988.

His first monograph, “Hodhi Zimbabwe”, was published in 2014.

Dondo represented Zimbabwe at the 54th Venice Biennale and exhibited at the Havana Biennale, Paris Photo Exhibition and multiple times at the Bamako Encounters – African Biennale of Photography.
