GROWING up in rural Mberengwa, Jabulani Chirasha used to herd cattle in the grazing lands of Murerezi area where today a high school that enrols over 700 pupils stands.
Murerezi High School does not only hold a special place in his heart because it was built by his father, the late Joram Chirasha, but is now the preferred choice for local villagers to enrol their children and has an impressive pass rate record thereby serving as a stepping stone for pupils in their academic journeys.
On 17 May 2024, villagers, pupils, teachers, local businesspeople and local politicians gathered at Murerezi High School to celebrate the life of the late Chirasha, a man who dedicated his life to uplifting his community, through a sports gala. Pupils competed in soccer, volleyball, netball and handball.

“Before my father built Murerezi High School in the 1980s, the next school was many kilometres away, and the lack of a nearby school used to present local villagers with problems when it was time to enrol their children for further education after primary school. Parents had to find lodgings for their children in rented rooms offered by shop owners, for them to enrol at the nearest school, a situation that was not safe, especially for girls who were vulnerable to sorts of abuse.
“The late Mr Chirasha decided to build a new school in the same area where I used to herd our family cattle and today we are all proud of the work that he put in to make sure that children of Murerezi and surrounding areas have easy access to high school education, without having to walk long distances. The school has a good pass rate and through the hard work of the teachers it will continue to produce students who will excel in their various careers,” said Jabulani.
The sports event ran under the theme: “Joram Chirasha memorial sports gala; celebrating our hero”.
The late Chirasha was a councillor for Murerezi Ward for 28 years. He passed away in 2021.
