FROM the wilderness to wonderland, Chahwanda Stadium has risen from the ashes, transforming a once-thick forest into a magnificent sports hub that has left the City of Kwekwe in awe.
In a spectacular first match, the stadium witnessed a thrilling encounter between Hardrock and Scottland, marking the return of top-flight football to the Midlands city after a 17-year hiatus.
The atmosphere was electric, with a capacity crowd of football enthusiasts and curious onlookers flocking to witness the spectacle.
The stadium’s state-of-the-art facilities, replete with European-style amenities, left a lasting impression on those who were at the venue for the Premiership’s Match-day one encounter.
“This is a dream come true,” beamed Mayor of Kwekwe, Albert Zinhanga. “Chahwanda Stadium is a beacon of hope and a testament to the city’s resilience and determination. We’re thrilled to welcome back top-flight football to Kwekwe, and we’re confident that this stadium will be a catalyst for growth and development in our city.
“I could see people walking from as far as Mbizo, which is about eight to 10km to the venue.
“I could see the excitement in them. It is one of the best stadiums I have seen in Zimbabwe where everyone has his own seat, clean ablution facilities. The teams played a good game worthy the money paid for.
“I want to thank Mr Chahwanda (Shepherd) for giving us an opportunity to watch top-flight football.
“It is going to bring the much-needed social rehabilitation,” said Zinhanga.
Fifteen months ago, in November 2024, the site where the stadium stands today was a thick forest.
The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Midlands Province, Owen Ncube, presided over the ground-breaking ceremony, marking the beginning of a new era for Kwekwe’s sports landscape.
Fast-forward to today, and the transformation is nothing short of breathtaking.
Hardrock, the proud owners of the stadium, had a remarkable journey to the top.
They won the ZIFA Midlands Division Two title, leading to the ground-breaking ceremony, earning promotion to the Central Region Soccer League, claiming the championship title by the end of the 2025 season.
Their remarkable performance paved the way for their return to the Premier Soccer League, and what a return it was!
To add to the excitement, South African Premiership side AmaZulu chairman, Sandile Zungu and his entourage made a special visit to the stadium, getting a first touch on the pitch and adding an extra layer of glamour to the occasion.
“This is a great day for football in Zimbabwe,” said Central Region Handball League chairperson, Edison Chiroodzo.
“We’re proud to see top-flight football returning to Kwekwe, and we’re confident that Chahwanda Stadium will be a hub of activity for years to come.
“The atmosphere inside and outside the stadium was exciting and charged. It was a huge moment for the host and visitors.”
Noah’s Ark Group of Schools Principal, Reggie Phiri, was left in awe.
“From the moment I stepped into the state-of-the-art venue, I was immersed in the excitement.
“The bucket seats filled fast, and the crowd was buzzing, when Hardrock took to the pitch, the energy was palpable. I felt like I was part of something special. The facilities there are top-notch with food, drinks, and views that make you want to bring the whole family.”
