senior.
I have known him for eight years now and we have been through a lot together. In fact, Garikai whom I often refer to as “Uncle” was always there for me especially during my formative days as a cub reporter.
To a certain extent, Garikai is what Robson Sharuko is to the sports desk at The Herald in terms of experience and a good writer whose analyses make interesting reading.
Get me right, I am not trying to bootlick anyone but I just want to bring to your attention some of the people whose contributions have impacted on the arts and Garikai is such.
Having said that, I noted with pride that Garikai is now anchoring a weekly television column in the The Sunday Mail. Well, for some time I have been a lone ranger but now that Garikai has since started writing on television that makes the two of us.
I know he has a bias towards sport and I am into entertainment but between the two of us there is a lot that we share. I hope that since we are both writing on television it should mean a wider coverage on a number of issues.
My apologies for the two-week break, it was not intentional. I had gone to Sesombe, Zhombe, for the burial of a friend and music maestro Tongai Moyo.
I still remember, it was Garikai and myself when we went to Kwekwe to see Dhewa.
We had lots of fun as Dhewa showed us around.
According to Kwekwe residents, Dhewa was ranked among the top five of the who’s who in the small town.
And since we were together with Dhewa we were treated like royal. The party went a gear up after Somandla Ndebele who was on his way back from the farms around Kwekwe came and joined us. His fans would cheer him up and in return Dhewa would dish out his broad smile.
It was during that time that I appreciated and learnt a lot about Dhewa. Frankly speaking, Dhewa was a loveable and charismatic musician.
He opened to me saying that: “Jona, vanhu vanoti ndinozvida ko ukasazvida unozodiwa nani?”
I laughed out loud because it showed that Dhewa knew what people thought about him. But again, I noted that it was the few that didn’t know him well, for some of us who had the opportunity to rub shoulders with
him, we embraced him for who he was. To me, Dhewa was a passionate perfectionist who did everything for his fans and I truly believe he deserves to be in the “Kwekwe’s Hall Fame” if there is anything like that.
Over to the small screen, The Herald once carried an analytical piece on Channel O Music Awards in which we asked if Zimbabwean musicians are not good enough to enter such awards.
