Parates capitalise on Shumba’s music popularity

Surveys done The Herald revealed that some pirates were using the picture of someone else on their pirated discs, which have flooded the streets.

Pirates in Budiriro and the city centre, among other places, are selling pirated copies of Shumba’s latest album “NdiMwari” at a paltry US$1, amount which flies in the face of the selling price of an original copy.
To make matters worse, the pirates have dared to put the face of the wrong person on the discs.

And those who know Shumba questioned the move, saying whoever agreed to have his face placed on the pirated discs should be tracked down and be brought to book for masquerading as the artiste.
“This is in total breach of intellectual property rights laws and the people responsible for the pirates deserve to be brought to book.

“They should leave Shumba to enjoy the fruits of his music by desisting from the practice (piracy),” said one fan of the Mutare-based gospel musician.
Meanwhile, the Mutare-based man of the moment made his maiden performance in Harare at the “Celebrate Life” gospel music concert held in the Harare Gardens recently.

This was the first time that Shumba appeared before his fans who only know him through his music, which is receiving rave reviews both on electronic and print media.
Ever since appearing on the mainstream music scene last year with his debut album “Ishe Wazvose”, Shumba has been “elusive” to both his fans and music promoters who want to sign him for shows.

Some of his hit songs that include “Zita”, “Wedenga”, “Hama”, “Kurwa Kwakanaka”, and “Ndichauya Nei” and “Mufaro” have become favourites among listeners and these have made him famous.
With just two albums – “Ishe Wazvose” (2009) and “NdiMwari” (2011), Shumba has risen from being a nonentity to what many have described as one of the best artistes ever since to emerge in Zimbabwe in recent times.

The two of his albums are currently occupying the top spots at Metro Studio’s top 10 music charts.
