adminCAPE TOWN. — A group of protesters caused chaos outside South African Rugby Union House in Cape Town yesterday calling for speedier transformation.
According to Netwerk24, police were forced to throw stun grenades after around 100 members of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) burst through the entrance to the building.
Protesters had arrived in Plattekloof from 8am.
Carrying placards with phrases such as “Cricket, netball and tennis are next” and “White supremacy must fall”, the ANCYL had a memorandum of demands accepted by a SA Rugby representative at around 12noon after which protests subsided.
South African sports minister Fikile Mbalula last month banned the federations in charge of cricket, rugby, netball and athletics in the country from hosting major international events due to them all not meeting their transformation targets following the release of the Imminent Persons Group (IPG) report.
While the protest had been scheduled some 48 hours ago, those unhappy with the speed of transformation couldn’t have been impressed by Monday’s confirmation that only five of the 28-man Junior Springboks Under-20 Championship squad were black. — AFP.
