SEASONED Sunshine Tour campaigner Tongo Charamba will carry the nation’s hopes going into the second day of the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open at Royal Harare today.Charamba was impressive yesterday when he shot a five-under-par 67.
He teed off in the afternoon and started on a low note but impressed in the back nine.
Charamba, who believes a local can win the Zimbabwe Open, is leading from the front and will go into today’s round expecting to improve.
Six birdies on both sides of the course and a bogey on par-four hole number 13 was all what Charamba needed to be among the top on the leader board where the pacesetter is sitting on seven-under-par 65. Ignatius Mketekete and Ryan Cairns were on one-under-par 71.
Promising amateur Stuart Krog finished on level par where he was tied with Sheldon Steyn while Philip Tshuma, Scott Vincent and Micky Hough were on one over-par 73.
“I am so happy to do well in the first round and I look forward to improve in the next round,” said Krog. “I had the right frame of mind and my intention is to make the cut and come out as the best local amateur.
“I hope to return tomorrow and continue to make putts and do well.”
Mohamad Rauf Mandhu, Jason Jackson and Tich Musemburi finished the first round on two-over-par 74 while Scott Ferguson and Ryan Lang where a shot further on three under.
Veteran Day Muyambo had a bad day in office and posted a seven over par but refused to blame the weather. “I could not get most of the basics right and I was expecting fine scores because of the weather but they were not coming,” Muyambo said.
