A mixed bag of more than 100 professional and amateur golfers are expected to converge at Hillside Golf Club in Mutare tomorrow (Saturday) for this year’s edition of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Commissioner General’s charity golf tournament.
The competition tees off at 9am, an hour after the start of registration, while the event prize presentation programme starts at 5pm.
Captain Mawere from Bata Shoe Company was the 2022 edition overall winner when the event was hosted by Masvingo Province.
Having started in 2011 as a vehicle to raise funds for bereaved or ailing ZPCS officers and their dependents, the Commissioner General’s charity golf competition has evolved to assist other members of the community.
To date, a total of 380 people from diverse backgrounds but generally disadvantaged have benefited from this initiative.
In an interview, ZPCS Officer Commanding Manicaland Commissioner Spetomusa Moyo Chinobva applauded the initiative for making life easier for disadvantaged members of the community in different parts of the country.
“Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services put in place a Trust Fund that was meant to take care of orphans, widows and the vulnerable members of the community.
“When it started in 2011, it was focusing on the orphans and widows of prison officers but it has moved on to also cater for the vulnerable members of the community.
“Basically, the initiative gave birth to the golf tournament that is meant to help the vulnerable in our community. The success of the initiative is also an advantage for the betterment of the community as it helps the vulnerable and disadvantaged,” said Commissioner Moyo Chinobva.
