Charleston Trust Primary School in Bulawayo will host a 5KM mini marathon this Saturday to raise awareness about the dangers of drug and substance abuse. The event aims to sensitise the public and rally stakeholders in the fight against this growing scourge.
Drug and substance abuse remain a pressing issue in Bulawayo, with the Government calling for collective action to address the problem. Recently, police in the city have intensified efforts to combat the crisis, arresting suspected drug dealers involved in the sale of hard drugs such as cocaine and crystal meth. These cases are currently being heard in court.
Speaking about the initiative, Charleston Trust Primary School administrator Ms. Beverly Manyiwa highlighted the devastating impact of drug abuse on communities and the need for schools to play an active role in addressing the issue.
“Drug and substance abuse is a cause for concern in our communities, as almost every family is affected. Many youths may not fully understand the effects of these substances. It is our wish to constantly remind people of the dangers, as knowledge is power. Schools must be involved in this agenda, as young people are the most affected by drug and substance abuse,” said Ms. Manyiwa.
The mini marathon is open to participants of all ages, reflecting the school’s commitment to involving all sectors of society in the fight against drug abuse.
“We are targeting all cross-sections of society because this is a fight that requires everyone’s involvement. We hope to attract at least 200 external participants. If we raise enough proceeds, we plan to expand our campaign beyond the Nkulumane community,” she added.
Located in Nkulumane suburb, Charleston Trust Primary School is a private institution that complements the Government’s efforts in delivering quality education. The school has been at the forefront of innovation, introducing coding and robotics to its curriculum from infant classes, significantly raising education standards in the western suburbs.
The mini marathon is expected to draw participants from across Bulawayo, fostering community spirit while addressing a critical issue affecting the city’s youth.
