Danisa Masuku
TOO close for comfort was all it took for a jealous man to beat up his wife.
Obert Masuku (36) could not stomach seeing his wife, Philani Ngwenya (28) standing zero centimetres apart from a man whom he suspected to be her lover.
After seeing the two in a compromising position, his blood boiled as he charged at them like a raging bull. He hit his wife with fists and kicked her.
The man, not mentioned in court papers, took to his heels but Ngwenya failed to flee as the blows rained heavily on her. As a result of the severe beating she bled and passed out.
She was then rushed to Inyathi District hospital where she was treated and discharged.
A police case was opened leading to Masukuas arrest. Appearing at the Inyathi magistrates court, he pleaded guilty to an assault charge.
a?I am sorry for what I did. I beat my wife out of anger as I suspected that she was in love with that man because I had seen them on several occasions near my homestead,a? he said.
When Ngwenya took to the stand she said the man was her distant relative.
a?I am not in love with the man, he is a distant relative. My husband has a tendency of shouting obscenities at me and always accuses me of sleeping around with men from the community,a? she said.
The magistrate on circuit Stephen Ndlovu convicted and sentenced Masuku to three months.
a?I have noted with concern that cases of domestic violence are on the rise and as a deterrent to would-be offenders I sentence you to an effective three months imprisonment,a? said Ndlovu.
