AFROCHINE Smelting Private Limited, which operates in Chegutu district, has been transforming the community through various projects since its inception in 2013.
The company is involved in the smelting of ferrochrome ore to produce ferrochrome alloy.
The company’s communications specialist, Mr Tichaona Zindonga, said apart from the organisation’s formulated policy on local employment that has seen 70 percent of its employees come directly from the Selous and Chegutu communities, various initiatives have been introduced by the company to cement China-Zimbabwe relations.
“In focusing on the community, the company has been very active in the drilling and equipping of boreholes to provide clean drinking water to the community,” he said.
“In the Toyi area and Railway 21 areas the company has managed to provide over a combined total coverage of 1 200 households with clean water.”
There has been focus on community schools where the company has built a classroom block for one primary school.
The company has also been instrumental in the provision of personal protective clothing to frontline health workers and the police.
Over 120 Christmas hampers have been donated to vulnerable families, the disadvantaged, the chronically ill and the elderly so they celebrate Christmas like the rest of the community every year since 2013.
“Corporate social responsibility for Afrochine is an active integral component of our operations and an ongoing exercise that will continue to benefit the community,” said Zindoga.
