Chegutu Pirates benefactor in fatal crash

CHEGUTU Pirates lost their benefactor, Columbus Makumbe, to a fatal road traffic accident in Norton on Tuesday.

The Norton businessman was also a former Zimbabwe Saints chairman.

Pirates’ coach, Richard Chunga, described Makumbe’s untimely death as a huge blow to the club.

“This is sad news for the club and we are really saddened by his passing.

“The void he has left will be difficult to fill because he was someone very passionate about football, particularly the Chegutu Pirates project.

“The club almost collapsed last year after encountering serious financial challenges, but he stepped in when it mattered,” said Chunga.

“It’s very unfortunate because recently, we communicated and he had set his targets for this season.

“He was promising so many things and what I know is that the club will never be the same without his contributions.

“He would give players allowances straight from his pocket and the respect he had earned from the players, technical department and the fans was huge.”

The team’s vice-captain, Lenny Chibaya, hailed Makumbe for his undying love for the team.

“It’s really disappointing that we have lost such a character, a man who gave his all for the club,” said Chibaya.

“With the little he had, he would convince us to see the bigger picture and we are forever grateful.

“He kept us going, we have many games which we told ourselves that let’s win this game for him even when there was little motivation.

“It’s very sad that our journey with him has ended in such a way.”
