THE Chibuku Super Cup presents Bulawayo giants Highlanders with a perfect 90th anniversary gift for its legion of supporters to cap a faltering 2016 season, according to the cluba��s technical director.
a�?There is no better 90th anniversary present for our supporters than winning the Chibuku Cup. The first hurdle will be progressing to the next round of the competition by overcoming Mutare City Rovers who are a very tricky side that beat us in our own backyard Barbourfields Stadium,a�? said technical director Cosmas Zulu.
Mutare City Rovers beat Bosso 2-1 in a league match in Bulawayo last month.
But for Zulu, the cup encounter is not necessarily a revenge match.
a�?We are over the league defeat at Barbourfields. Cup matches are entirely different from league fixtures because the so-called small teams have a tendency of springing surprises. We can only do our part and prepare for the match thoroughly,a�? he said.
The two teams will meet on the weekend of 16-18 September in the first round of the 16-team tournament.
The quarter-finals will be played between September 30 and 2 October.
Semi-finalists meet on the weekend of October 21-23, with the finals pencilled for November 5. Winners of the tournament will take home $75 000.
Highlanders dedicated 2016 to celebrating 90 years of existence since their formation in 1926.
The celebrations climax at the end of the year and in the event that the reigning Zimbabwe National Army Commandera��s Charities Shield champions go all the way to the finals and win the Chibuku Super Cup, it would be double celebrations for coach Erol Akbay and his men.
